BUS 100 INTRODUCTION TO KEYBOARDING (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: Provisional admission
Introduces the touch system of keyboarding placing emphasis on correct techniques. Topics include: learning the alphabetic keyboard, the numeric keyboard and keypad, building speed and accuracy, and proofreading. Students attain a minimum 25 GWAM (gross words a minute) on 5-minute timings with no more than 3 errors.

BUS 101 BEGINNING DOCUMENT PROCESSING (1-9-5)
Prerequisite: Provisional admission
Introduces the touch system of keyboarding placing emphasis on correct techniques, mastery of the keyboard, and basic business documents. Students attain a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute with a maximum of 5 errors on a
5-minute timed keyboarding test. Topics include: learning the keyboard; building speed and accuracy; formatting basic business documents; language arts; and proofreading.  Laboratory practice parallels class instruction.

BUS 102 INTERMEDIATE DOCUMENT PROCESSING (1-9-5)
Prerequisite: BUS 101
Continues the development of keyboarding speed and accuracy with further mastery of correct keyboarding techniques. Students attain a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute with a maximum of 5 errors on a 5-minute timed keyboarding test. Topics include: building speed and accuracy; formatting and producing business documents; language arts; and  proofreading. Laboratory practice parallels class instruction.

BUS 103 ADVANCED DOCUMENT PROCESSING (1-9-5)
Prerequisites: BUS 102, ENG 111
Continues the development of keyboarding speed and accuracy with a mastery of complex document production. Students attain a minimum typing speed of 50 words per minute with a maximum of 5 errors on a 5-minute timed keyboarding test. Topics include: building speed and accuracy; integrated projects/applications; language arts; and  proofreading. Laboratory practice parallels class instruction.

BUS 105 DATABASE FUNDAMENTALS (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: Program admission, SCT 100
Emphasizes use of database management software packages to access, manipulate, and create file data. Topics include: data entry; data manipulation and updating; data access; database creation; and sort and print functions for file documentation.

BUS 106 OFFICE PROCEDURES (5-0-5)
Prerequisite: Program admission
Emphasizes essential skills required for the business office. Topics include: office protocol; time management; telecommunications and telephone techniques; office equipment; office mail; references; records management; and travel and meeting arrangements.

BUS 107 MACHINE TRANSCRIPTION (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: BUS 102, ENG 111, SCT 100
Emphasizes transcribing mailable documents from dictation using a typewriter or a word processor. Topics include: equipment and supplies maintenance and usage; work area management; transcription techniques; productivity and accuracy; proofreading; and language art skills.

BUS 108 WORD PROCESSING (4-6-7)
Prerequisites: SCT 100 and/or BUS 101
Emphasizes an intensive use of word processing software to create and revise business documents. Topics include: equipment and supplies maintenance and usage; work area management; word processing software; and proofreading.

BUS 109 APPLIED OFFICE PROCEDURES (1-4-3)
Prerequisite/Co-requisite:  Must be in last quarter; may take concurrently with last quarter coursework
Serves as a capstone course which provides students with the opportunity to apply skills acquired in other coursework.  Topics include:  applied word/information processing skills; applied communication skills; applied telecommunications skills; applied records management skills; public relations skills; use of office equipment; and procurement of office equipment/supplies.

BUS 112 BASIC DESKTOP PUBLISHING (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: Program admission
Provides basic instruction on desktop publishing software to create common documents such as brochures, reports, and other office documents. Topics include: basic desktop publishing concepts, operation of desktop publishing software, layout of documents, graphic design fundamentals, and applications.

BUS 151 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS (5-0-5)
Prerequisite: Program admission
Introduces organization and management concepts of the business world. Topics include business organization, enterprise management, marketing management and financial management.

BUS 157 ELECTRONIC CALCULATORS (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: Provisional admission
Develops skill in the use of electronic calculators to interpret, solve,  and record results of various types of problems involving the four arithmetic processes. Topics include: machine parts and features; touch system techniques for the basic operation of the calculator; and arithmetic applications.

BUS 158 LEGAL TERMINOLOGY (3-0-3)
Prerequisite:  Provisional admission
Introduces the elements of legal terminology.  Emphasis is placed on building familiarity with legal words that apply to the court system, contracts, family law, real estate, litigation, wills/probate, bankruptcy, and general legal terms.

BUS 161 DESKTOP PUBLISHING I (2-6-5)
Prerequisite: BUS 101
Emphasizes intensive use of desktop publishing software to create publishing such as letterheads, resumes, fliers, brochures, reports, newsletters, and business cards. Topics include: desktop publishing concerts, operation of DTP software, electronics page layout, basic graphic design, and practical applications.

BUS 164 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS CULTURE (5-0-5)
Prerequisite:  Provisional admission
Provides instruction in the skills and attitudes necessary to function effectively both professionally and interpersonally in the workplace. Topics include: health and wellness; exercise; stress, time, and money management; work ethics; wardrobe on the job; workplace communications; and business entertainment, travel, and international culture.

BUS 167 COMPUTER GRAPHICS AND DESIGN (4-2-5)
Prerequisite:  Program admission
Introduces how to design and transmit electronic communications, how to create photographic document, insert animation and sound to computer-generated charts, graphs, and diagrams.

BUS 201 ADVANCED WORD PROCESSING (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: BUS 108, ENG 111
Provides instruction in advanced word processing. Topics include: advanced word processing concepts and applications; and proofreading.

BUS 202 SPREADSHEET FUNDAMENTALS (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: MAT 111 or MAT 191, SCT 100
Provides instruction in spreadsheet applications. Students become proficient in creating and modifying spreadsheets and in printing files. Topics include: spreadsheet fundamentals; data entry/modification; computation using functions/formulas; charts and graphs; and printing.

BUS 203 OFFICE MANAGEMENT (5-0-5)
Prerequisites: BUS 106
Provides students with an overview of management concepts, styles, and skills.  Topics include:  management styles; leadership traits; ergonomics/workflow; communication channels; business ethics; supervisory techniques; and job performance evaluation techniques.

BUS 204 HALF-TIME BUSINESS OFFICE SPECIALIST INTERNSHIP (0-18-6)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of all required course work
Provides student work experience in a professional environment. Topics include: application of classroom knowledge and skills; work environment functions; and listening/following directions. Students will be under the supervision of the Business  Office Technology Provisional faculty and/or persons designated to coordinate work experience arrangements.

BUS 206 HALF-TIME LEGAL OFFICE SPECIALIST INTERNSHIP (0-18-6)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of all required coursework
Provides student work experience in a legal office environment. Topics include: application of classroom knowledge and skills; work environment functions; and listening/following directions. Students will be under the supervision of the Business   Office Technology Provisional faculty and/or persons designated to coordinate work experience arrangements.

BUS 208 OFFICE ACCOUNTING (5-0-5)
Prerequisite: MAT 111
Introduces fundamental concepts of accounting. Topics include: the accounting equation; debits; credits; journalizing; posting and proving the general ledger; accounts payable; payroll; and financial statements.

BUS 211 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (3-2-4)
Prerequisites: Program admission
Introduces the basic spelling and pronunciation of medical terms, and the use of these terms as they relate to anatomy, treatment, surgery, and drugs. Topics include: word analysis, word elements, spelling, pronunciation, and semantics.

BUS 212 ANATOMY AND TERMINOLOGY (5-0-5)
Prerequisites: BUS 211
Introduces the structure and function of the human body including medical terminology. Topics include: body structures, body functions, and medical terminology.

BUS 213 MEDICAL DOCUMENT PROCESSING/TRANSCRIPTION (1-9-5)
Prerequisites: BUS 102, BUS 211, ENG 111,
Provides experience in medical machine transcription working with the most frequently used medical reports. Topics include: equipment and supplies maintenance and usage, work area management, spelling, definitions, punctuation, processing/transcription speed and accuracy, resource utilization, and pronunciation.

BUS 214 MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION II (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: MAS 114
Continues the development of speed and accuracy in the transcription of medical reports. Topics include: proper maintenance and usage of equipment and supplies; work area management; pronunciation; spelling; definitions; typing speed and accuracy; punctuation; and the use of reference books.

BUS 216 MEDICAL OFFICE PROCEDURES (5-0-5)
Prerequisites: BUS 102, BUS 212
Emphasizes essential skills required for the medical office. Topics include: medical law and ethics; patient relations/human relations; medical records management; scheduling appointments; pegboard accounting; health insurance; and billing/collection.

BUS 217 LEGAL OFFICE PROCEDURES I (4-6-7)
Prerequisites: BUS 102, ENG 111, BUS 158
Introduces office procedures practiced by the legal secretary. Topics include: preparation of legal documents and correspondence; ethics; and legal office procedures. Specific topics covered include legal office duties; the courts and court documents; litigation; criminals; wills; probate; real estate; corporations; family law; and non-court documents.

BUS 218 LEGAL OFFICE PROCEDURES II (4-6-7)
Prerequisites: BUS 217, ENG 112
Continues office procedures practiced by the legal secretary. Topics include: preparation of legal documents and correspondence; ethics; and legal office procedures.  Specific topics covered include legal office duties; the courts and court documents; litigation; criminals; wills; probate; real estate; corporations; family law; and noncourt documents.

BUS 219 LEGAL OFFICE SPECIALIST INTERNSHIP (0-36-12)
Prerequisite: Must be in last quarter; may take concurrently with last quarter coursework
Provides student work experience in an off-campus legal environment.  Topics include:  application of classroom knowledge and skills; work environment functions; and listen/following directions.  Students will be under the supervision of the Business Office Technology Provisional faculty and/or persons designated to coordinate work experience arrangements.

BUS 226 MEDICAL OFFICE BILLING/CODING/INSURANCE (5-0-5)
Prerequisites: BUS 101, AHS 109 or BUS 211, AHS 101 or BUS 212, ENG 111
Provides an introduction to medical coding skills and applications of international coding standards for billing of health care services. Provides the knowledge and skills to apply coding of procedures for billing purposes. Provides an introduction to medical coding as it relates to health insurance. Topics include: International classification of diseases, code book formats: guidelines and conventions; coding techniques; formats of the ICD-9 and CPT manuals; health insurance; billing and collections.

BUS 227 LEGAL DOCUMENT PROCESSING/TRANSCRIPTION (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: BUS 102, ENG 112, BUS 108, BUS 217
Provides experience in legal transcription working with the most frequently used legal reports.  Topics include:  equipment and supplies maintenance and usage; work station management; spelling; definitions; punctuation; processing/transcription speed and accuracy; resource utilization; and pronunciation.

BUS 261 PRESENTATION FUNDAMENTALS (1-4-3)
Prerequisites: Program admission, SCT 100
Provides a study of the fundamentals of creating and modifying a presentation. Topics include creating a presentation, modifying a presentation, working with text, working with visual elements, customizing a presentation, creating output, delivering a presentation, and managing files.

BUS 262 WEB PAGE DESIGN (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: Program admission
Provides instruction in Web page authoring and site management. Emphasizes the concepts necessary for individuals to create and manage professional quality Web sites. Topics include: Web Site Creation, Web Page Development and Design, Hyperlink Creation, Test, and Repair, Integration, Web Site Navigation, and Web Site Management.

BUS 263 ELECTRONIC MAIL FUNDAMENTALS (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: Program admission
Provides instruction in the fundamentals of communicating with others inside and outside the organization. Emphasizes the concepts necessary for individuals and workgroups to organize, find, view, and share information via electronic communication channels. Topics include: Internal and External Communication, Message Management, Calendar Management, Navigation, Contact Usage, Tasks Usage, Notes Usage, and Integration with other Applications.
